Microsoft on Friday unveiled a revamped version of its Copilot software, bringing chat, coding, and agentic capabilities together in a single package. The company calls the combined offering Autopilot.

The platform is intended to function as a one stop shop for workplace needs. Users can prepare pitch documents or build spreadsheets, then ask the artificial intelligence system to reason over the data and surface insights they might not otherwise see.

Yet Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said winning customers will require more than bundling powerful capabilities into one product. The company must persuade users that they can safely rely on artificial intelligence as it handles increasingly autonomous activity.

"Trust is going to be the biggest issue for us," Nadella told Deirdre Bosa.

Nadella framed the concern around credentials, autonomy, and customer control. "Can I really trust [AI] with all of my credentials when it does autonomous activity? How do I make sure that this is something that I can feel that I'm in control of? And in the enterprise, this is everything," he said.

That issue sits at the center of Microsoft’s effort to combine multiple artificial intelligence functions into a unified workplace package. Copilot is designed to move between ordinary assistance, coding tasks, document preparation, spreadsheet work, and agentic operations.

The new Copilot also offers customers two billing choices. Microsoft is providing standard per user plans for general artificial intelligence work, along with a pay as you go option for longer, multistep agentic work.

Nadella said the two offerings should be particularly useful as artificial intelligence model makers and providers gradually reduce customer subsidies. Microsoft’s structure combines subscription access with additional functionality billed according to usage.

"The way I think about our subscriptions [is] it's ultimately going to deliver more value every day of the week as models improve. And then on top of that, we have usage-based functionality that any user at any time can use with no limits," the CEO explained.

Nadella said the combined model is intended to support broad access while keeping the product aligned with customer value. "And so that combination gives us, I think, the right business model to be able to both deliver broad access, deliver the [return on investment] that's expected, and most importantly, continuously be aligned with where customers will see value," he said.

Microsoft is also building model choice into the new Copilot. The company said the software will automatically route a user’s prompt to the best available model from OpenAI and Anthropic.

Users will not be limited to automatic routing. Microsoft said they will also be able to choose models manually, and the company plans to add further options from other model makers in the future.

The Windows maker said its per seat option will include token limits. According to the company, those limits are set at levels that most people will never reach during ordinary use.

Customers who require additional capabilities can instead select usage based billing. That arrangement gives users another route when their artificial intelligence work extends beyond the capacity included with the per seat option.

The revamped product therefore brings together more than chat and coding assistance. It combines workplace creation tools, reasoning over user data, autonomous activity, model selection, subscription access, and billing tied to additional usage.

At the same time, Nadella made clear that capability alone will not settle the central concern facing the platform. Users must feel they remain in control when artificial intelligence works with credentials and conducts autonomous activity.

Microsoft’s new package gives customers choices over models and billing while consolidating several tools into one offering. Nadella’s comments place trust, control, and expected return on investment at the heart of whether enterprise users embrace those capabilities.
