Amazon stock climbed more than 3% in early Monday trading after Morgan Stanley named the company a top pick and lifted its price target. The firm raised that target to $350 from $335, putting a substantially larger potential gain in view.
The new target implies about 40% upside from Amazon’s Friday closing price of $250. Morgan Stanley also outlined a bear case of $220 per share and a bull case of $410, producing a risk to reward ratio of 3 to 1.
Analyst Brian Nowak retained his Overweight rating while pointing to five developments that could propel Amazon shares. The catalysts span cloud computing growth, artificial intelligence services, shopping agents and robotics.
“In a market of see-sawing AI leaders and laggards, we detail 5 catalysts ahead to re-rate shares and drive material outperformance,” Nowak wrote in a note Sunday.
Faster growth at Amazon Web Services leads the firm’s case. Morgan Stanley now expects revenue at AWS, Amazon’s cloud unit, to grow 47% in 2027 and another 42% in 2028.
Those estimates are higher than the firm’s previous expectations of 41% growth in 2027 and 37% in 2028. The change followed Nvidia’s disclosure that it expects AWS to purchase and deploy about 2 million of its graphics processing units across those two years.
That anticipated chip deployment also pushed Morgan Stanley’s capital spending estimates for Amazon higher. The firm now forecasts capital spending of $355 billion in 2027, followed by $365 billion in 2028.
Morgan Stanley expects the cloud business to produce larger profits alongside that revenue expansion. Nowak projects AWS operating margins of 42% in 2027 and 44% in 2028, supporting approximately $16.50 in Amazon earnings per share during 2028.
Amazon’s Bedrock service represents another catalyst in the firm’s analysis. Bedrock is Amazon’s AI model service, and Morgan Stanley believes greater visibility into the operation could lift the valuation assigned to Amazon shares.
According to the note, Amazon trades at about 15 times estimated 2028 earnings. Morgan Stanley sees additional information about Bedrock as a possible reason for investors to award the stock a higher valuation.
AI shopping is another piece of the bullish argument. Nowak expects Amazon to emerge as a winner as AI shopping agents become more widespread, and he expects the company eventually to partner with Meta’s Muse AI agent.
The holiday season will provide the first major test for AI shopping, according to the report. That gives investors a relatively near opportunity to watch how the emerging technology interacts with Amazon’s retail business.
Robotics provides the fifth catalyst and carries potentially significant savings. Morgan Stanley estimates that every 10% of Amazon’s global units moving through fulfillment centers equipped with robotics could save the company between $2 billion and $4 billion annually.
The firm identifies robotics as a catalyst for 2027. Its estimate links greater use of automated fulfillment operations with billions of dollars in possible yearly savings as more global units move through those facilities.
Amazon stock has gained about 11% this year, although it remains roughly 10% below its early August high. Earlier this month, Yahoo Finance’s Brian Sozzi observed that Amazon was trading at one of its lowest trailing price to earnings ratios in years.
Morgan Stanley’s $350 target rests on a valuation of about 21 times the firm’s 2028 earnings estimate. That compares with the roughly 15 times 2028 earnings valuation cited in the note for the shares.
Investors will soon receive another look at Amazon’s financial performance. The company is scheduled to report its third quarter results on Oct. 29 after the closing bell.
