American Express delivered adjusted quarterly earnings of $4.68 per share, clearing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.47 per share. The result also improved from adjusted earnings of $4.14 per share in the same period a year earlier.

The quarterly report produced an earnings surprise of +4.70%. The figures were adjusted to exclude nonrecurring items, providing the basis for comparison with the consensus forecast and the prior year result.

American Express also exceeded expectations in the preceding quarter. Analysts had expected earnings of $4.41 per share, while the credit card issuer and global payments company reported $4.53 per share, generating a positive surprise of +2.72%.

The latest performance continued a largely favorable run against profit forecasts. American Express has surpassed consensus earnings per share estimates in three of the past four quarters.

Revenue presented a more complicated picture for the quarter ended September 2026. American Express posted $20.06 billion, missing the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 0.34%, although that total was higher than revenue of $18.43 billion one year earlier.

The company has exceeded consensus revenue estimates in three of the past four quarters. That record means American Express has frequently cleared expectations on both revenue and earnings, even though the latest sales figure landed slightly below the forecast.

Management’s commentary during the earnings call could play an important role in the stock’s immediate response to the newly released figures. Future earnings expectations will also help determine whether investors view the profit beat as sustainable.

American Express shares have lost about 12.1% since the beginning of the year. Over the same period, the S&P 500 has gained 12%, leaving the company substantially behind the broader market despite its repeated earnings beats.

That underperformance keeps attention focused on what may come next for the stock. One measure available to investors is the company’s earnings outlook, including consensus forecasts for upcoming quarters and any recent changes in those expectations.

Zacks says empirical research shows a strong correlation between short term stock movements and trends in earnings estimate revisions. Investors can monitor those revisions directly or use the Zacks Rank, which is designed to draw on changes in earnings estimates.

Before the latest earnings release, the pattern of estimate revisions for American Express was mixed. That trend could change after analysts assess the new report and any additional information presented by management.

The existing revision picture gives American Express a Zacks Rank No. 3, which carries a Hold designation. Based on that status, the shares are expected to perform in line with the market in the near future.

Current consensus estimates call for earnings of $4.35 per share on revenue of $20.76 billion in the coming quarter. For the current fiscal year, analysts expect earnings of $17.65 per share and revenue of $79.47 billion.

Industry conditions could also materially affect the stock’s performance. The Financial Miscellaneous Services group is currently in the bottom 28% of more than 250 Zacks industries, while Zacks research indicates that the top 50% outperform the bottom 50% by more than 2 to 1.

Brookfield Asset Management, another company in the same industry, has not yet reported results for the quarter ended September 2026. Its results are expected to be released on November 6.

The investment manager is expected to report quarterly earnings of $0.47 per share, representing an increase of 14.6% from a year earlier. Its consensus earnings estimate has been revised 2.6% lower during the past 30 days.

Brookfield Asset Management is also expected to post revenue of $1.57 billion. That forecast represents growth of 12.9% compared with the same quarter a year earlier.
