Apple is closing in on Nvidia’s position as the world’s most valuable company, even as tough reviews of Apple’s new foldable Duo smartphone fail to shake bullish investors. The narrow market value gap has put the technology giants within striking distance of a dramatic change at the top.
Apple’s market capitalization stands at $5.08 trillion, compared with Nvidia’s $5.12 trillion. That leaves Apple less than 1% behind the chip company that has largely held the corporate valuation crown for more than two years.
The potential reversal comes as investors begin questioning the health of the artificial intelligence trade. Nvidia, one of the central companies in that trade, has recently faced pressure after a long period of strength.
Nvidia shares have declined 7.3% over the past month, while Apple shares have advanced 2.5% during the same period. Those contrasting moves have brought their respective market values remarkably close together.
Apple is viewed as a more defensive investment because of its focus on hardware. That perception now stands in contrast to growing scrutiny around companies pursuing aggressive artificial intelligence spending plans.
Reviews of Apple’s foldable Duo smartphone have been tough, but the criticism does not appear to have unsettled the stock’s supporters. Investors remain focused on the potential pool of iPhone owners who have gone years without upgrading their devices.
Yorkville Ives partner Dan Ives pointed to that large group of customers in a note about Apple. He believes the number of older iPhones still in use could provide meaningful support for demand for the Duo.
“With roughly 375 million iPhones that have not upgraded in over 4 years, we believe the pool of buyers waiting for a reason to upgrade is deep enough to keep Duo demand high well into 2027,” Ives said.
The battle for the market value crown is unfolding during a difficult stretch for major technology stocks. On Thursday, Big Tech led a broad decline as investors pushed the artificial intelligence trade lower.
The Nasdaq Composite fell nearly 2.6%, marking its worst single day decline since June. The sharp move showed how quickly pressure on artificial intelligence shares could spread across the technology sector.
Meta added to those concerns with its third quarter results. The company reported negative free cash flow for the first time since 2012 while continuing to spend aggressively on artificial intelligence.
Meta also said it would issue a new tranche of stock to help finance its artificial intelligence buildout. That disclosure arrived as investors were already reassessing the spending demands associated with the sector.

Against that backdrop, Nvidia’s recent decline has become especially significant because the company’s valuation lead over Apple is now so small. A market capitalization difference of $40 billion separates the two companies based on the reported figures.
Apple’s advance has occurred despite the harsh reviews surrounding the Duo. The stock’s 2.5% monthly gain suggests those reviews have not prevented investors from bidding its shares higher during the period.
Nvidia’s 7.3% retreat has simultaneously reduced the cushion that once separated it from Apple. The chip company remains the more valuable of the two, but its advantage has fallen to less than 1%.
The comparison also highlights the different investment cases now surrounding the companies. Nvidia remains closely associated with artificial intelligence, while Apple’s hardware focus has encouraged investors to view it as a more defensive play.
Apple’s possible rise to the top therefore comes at a moment when some investors are reconsidering the health of the artificial intelligence trade. Thursday’s technology selloff, Nvidia’s monthly decline, and Meta’s spending disclosures have placed that debate squarely in view.
For now, Nvidia still holds the crown with its $5.12 trillion market capitalization. Yet Apple’s $5.08 trillion valuation leaves the iPhone maker on the cusp of overtaking the chip giant as the world’s most valuable company.
