OpenAI announced Wednesday that it will expand ChatGPT Ads into 26 additional countries, accelerating efforts to establish advertising as a meaningful pillar of its growing artificial intelligence business. The move broadens the reach of a product that remains only months old.
The expansion brings ChatGPT Ads to 89 countries worldwide, according to OpenAI. It represents the latest step in the company’s effort to build an advertising operation alongside its other sources of business and revenue.
OpenAI has promoted its 8 month old advertising product as a new pillar of the company. Its broader business also includes enterprise contracts, consumer subscriptions and usage based application programming interfaces, commonly known as APIs.
Advertising gives OpenAI another route for generating revenue from ChatGPT as the platform attracts consumers and businesses. Digital ads have long served as a major revenue stream for other large technology companies, including Google and Meta.
“Our goal is to make ads useful to people as they pursue their goals and make decisions — and effective for the businesses that advertise with us,” OpenAI said in a release.
The company’s advertising business reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in August, according to a previous CNBC report. That was a sharp increase from the $100 million annualized revenue run rate recorded in March.
OpenAI also said Wednesday that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on the platform. The figure provides another measure of the company’s progress as it works to turn its young advertising product into a larger business.
ChatGPT Ads began testing in the United States in February. Since then, OpenAI has moved to expand the product well beyond its original test market, culminating in Wednesday’s addition of 26 countries.
The advertising strategy has drawn ridicule from Anthropic, OpenAI’s chief rival. Anthropic made OpenAI’s move into advertising the centerpiece of its first Super Bowl campaign, using the high profile event to contrast the two companies’ approaches.
Anthropic also pledged to keep Claude, its competing chatbot, free from advertising. That promise established a clear difference between Anthropic’s stated approach and OpenAI’s effort to create a substantial advertising operation within ChatGPT.
The rivalry comes as both companies prepare for what are widely expected to be blockbuster initial public offerings. Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic has publicly disclosed when it intends to make its stock market debut.
OpenAI executives have signaled that they are looking toward a 2027 listing. That prospective timeline places the rapid development of ChatGPT Ads within the company’s wider effort to build multiple business pillars before a potential public offering.
Anthropic’s leaders, meanwhile, have been actively meeting with prospective investors in recent weeks. The company has not publicly disclosed a planned debut date, leaving the timing of its possible initial public offering unsettled.
OpenAI said the next stage of ChatGPT Ads growth will include additional advertising formats. The company also plans to continue developing measurement capabilities and buying options as more businesses use the platform for campaigns.
Beyond conventional campaign tools, OpenAI is exploring new ways for businesses to interact natively with ChatGPT consumers. The company presented that work as part of an effort to connect users making decisions with businesses offering products and services.
“As more people turn to ChatGPT to explore needs, evaluate options, and make decisions, we see an opportunity to help them discover products and services — and to help businesses of every size grow and thrive,” OpenAI said.
The expansion combines wider geographic availability with plans for more formats, improved measurement and additional buying choices. With 89 countries now included, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT Ads alongside enterprise contracts, subscriptions and APIs as a core part of its business.
