Donald Trump offered a blunt assessment of presidential power during an Oct. 17 rally in Kentucky, portraying his second term as far more potent than his first. The president pointed to geographic name changes as evidence that his administration can act outside traditional policymaking channels.
Trump focused on his decision to change the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. While touting that move, he also took a jab at Google and claimed the company now treats him differently because of his renewed political influence.
“I don't think I could have done this in my first term. This is a much more powerful term. I can do stuff that's unbelievable,” Trump said. He then added, “So, I put it in, I called Google, Google Maps. See, Google wouldn't have taken my call in the first [term], now they kiss my a--.”
The president also boasted about changing Lake Ontario to Lake America. According to the source, Trump issued that executive order amid the continuing trade war between the United States and Canada.
Google searches demonstrate that Trump has real authority over official geographic naming inside the United States, though the results are not universal. American users see the Gulf of America, while users outside the country continue to see the Gulf of Mexico.
Google’s AI overview also provides an explanation of the naming dispute. The difference means the company’s presentation depends on where a user is searching, rather than imposing the new American designation on users everywhere.
Google adopted the Gulf of America label for American users one week after Trump issued his executive order on Jan. 20, 2025, the date of his inauguration. Google, which is owned by Alphabet, said the change followed its policy of recognizing official government updates.
The company offered the same explanation when it faced backlash over changing Lake Ontario to Lake America. Google’s position was that its actions reflected established corporate policy, not the force of Trump’s personal influence.
Trump had previously joked about testing the limits of that influence. During an Oct. 10 appearance in Tennessee, he told the crowd that he had called Google and floated the idea of naming an ocean after himself.
“How do you feel about the 'Trump Ocean' for the Atlantic or the Pacific? You know what they said? 'We've had it. That's enough. We're not doing it anymore.' I said 'I agree.' No, I was only kidding,” Trump told the crowd.
Although Google attributes the geographic changes to policy, the company has developed significant financial connections to Trump during his second term. Google donated $1 million to Trump’s 2025 inauguration, a substantial increase from its contributions connected to earlier inaugurations.
Politico reported that the search platform donated only $285,000 to the 2016 and 2020 inaugurations. Alphabet has also contributed $22 million toward renovations of Trump’s White House ballroom.
Google has followed several mandates advanced by Trump’s administration. The company scaled back its diversity, equity and inclusion hiring goals after saying it was reviewing Trump’s executive orders seeking to curb DEI practices.
The platform has also participated in government artificial intelligence initiatives. It helped power America.gov, described as the administration’s official government chatbot, and pledged $150 million in computing power to support Trump’s Genesis Mission.
The Genesis Mission is intended to use artificial intelligence to improve scientific research. That pledge places Google’s computing resources behind one of the administration’s prominent technology initiatives.
The financial relationship also extends to Trump’s investments. His latest financial disclosure says his independently managed investment accounts own Alphabet shares with a combined value exceeding $15.9 million.
Google did not respond to Moneywise’s request for comment before publication. Trump’s boast casts the relationship as a display of presidential muscle, while Google maintains that its naming decisions follow official government changes and established company policy.
