Anthropic has struck a deal worth about $3.4 billion to secure gas fired power generators for data centers, according to a Financial Times report published Sunday. The agreement focuses on the electricity requirements surrounding the AI startup’s expanding computing ambitions.

The company bought commitments for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy duty generators from OnePWR Solutions in late September, the report said. OnePWR is an equipment supplier based in San Antonio, Texas.

The transaction gives Anthropic access to a substantial amount of generator capacity without acquiring the supplier itself. The Financial Times report drew a clear distinction between buying generator commitments and purchasing OnePWR as a company.

Anthropic did not acquire OnePWR through the agreement, according to the report. None of the supplier’s employees transferred to the AI startup as part of the transaction.

Even without an acquisition or employee transfer, the deal included engineering and construction capabilities required to install the generators. The Financial Times attributed that detail to a person familiar with the matter.

The reported arrangement therefore covers more than commitments for generating equipment. It also includes capabilities tied directly to the installation work needed to put the generators in place for Anthropic’s data center requirements.

Reuters said it could not immediately verify the Financial Times report. Anthropic and OnePWR also did not respond to requests for comment, leaving the details based on the newspaper’s reporting and its unidentified source.

The lack of immediate responses means neither company publicly confirmed the reported $3.4 billion value, the 1.7 gigawatts of commitments, or the installation capabilities described in the report. Reuters presented each of those elements with attribution to the Financial Times.

Anthropic’s push for additional power and computing capacity comes as demand remains strong for its Claude family of AI models. That demand has prompted the company to secure more infrastructure capacity, according to the source report.

The generator agreement addresses the power side of that expansion. Data centers require both computing resources and the electricity capacity needed to operate them, and Anthropic’s reported deal specifically concerns gas fired generators intended for such facilities.

The commitments were purchased in late September, according to the Financial Times. No additional timeline for installation, construction, or operation of the generators was provided in the source report.

The report also did not provide a breakdown of how the roughly $3.4 billion value is divided among the generators, engineering capabilities, and construction capabilities. It identified the total reported value and the amount of generating capacity covered by the commitments.

Anthropic’s longer range infrastructure expectations are considerably larger than this single generator agreement. Reuters reported in September that the company expects to spend more than $500 billion over the next 10 years building AI infrastructure.

That projected spending figure represents Anthropic’s expectation rather than a report that the entire amount has already been spent. The $3.4 billion generator deal is a separate reported agreement tied to securing power equipment and installation capabilities.

The two figures nevertheless show the scale described in the reports surrounding Anthropic’s infrastructure plans. One concerns commitments for 1.7 gigawatts of heavy duty generators, while the other concerns expected AI infrastructure spending across a 10 year period.

For now, the central development remains the Financial Times report that Anthropic secured the generator commitments from OnePWR Solutions.
