AT&T Inc. customers affected by two cybersecurity breaches disclosed in 2024 could soon begin receiving settlement payments. A federal judge earlier this month granted final approval to a $177 million class action agreement that may provide eligible customers with as much as $5,000.
The settlement resolves a lawsuit alleging that AT&T failed to put adequate cybersecurity measures in place to protect customers’ personal information. AT&T, which trades under the ticker T, agreed to the settlement while continuing to deny any wrongdoing.
The case centers on two separate data breach incidents announced by the company during 2024. Customers whose personal information was compromised in either incident, or in both incidents, were eligible to submit claims before the deadline.
AT&T disclosed the first incident on March 30, 2024. The company said a data set released on the dark web contained information belonging to AT&T customers, placing affected individuals within the scope of the settlement process.
The company announced the second breach on July 12, 2024. In that incident, limited data was illegally downloaded from an AT&T workspace located on an outside cloud platform, creating another group of potentially eligible customers.
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas approved the settlement on Oct. 2. If no appeal is filed, the settlement’s effective date is estimated to occur on Nov. 12.
That effective date is important because it determines when the distribution process can proceed. Payments must be distributed by electronic transfer or paper check within 60 days after the official date when the settlement terms can no longer be appealed.
The window for submitting a claim has already closed. The deadline was Dec. 18, 2025, meaning customers who did not file by that date can no longer submit a claim under the settlement process described in the agreement.
Customers who filed their claims on time can still monitor the process. The settlement website, TelecomDataSettlement.com, provides the most recent information for claimants waiting to learn about approval, timing, and eventual payment distribution.
Potential payments differ depending on which settlement class covers a claimant and whether that person submitted documentation of a financial loss. Members of the first settlement class with a documented loss occurring in 2019 or later may qualify for a cash payment of up to $5,000.
Members of the second settlement class face a different payment limit. Those with qualifying losses that occurred on or after April 14, 2024, may receive as much as $2,500 through the settlement.
Eligible class members were not limited to seeking reimbursement for documented losses. They also had the option to submit a claim for a pro rata share of money remaining in the settlement fund after specified expenses and awards were paid.
Those deductions include settlement administration expenses, attorneys’ fees, costs, and service awards. The amount available for pro rata payments therefore depends on the remaining settlement fund after those obligations are covered.
For customers with approved claims, the next key development is the settlement becoming effective and no longer subject to appeal. Once that point is reached, the agreement requires payments to be sent within 60 days, either electronically or through a paper check.
The settlement creates the prospect of meaningful compensation for customers who documented losses, although the maximum amount depends on class membership and the timing of those losses. Claimants who selected the pro rata option will instead share what remains after the settlement’s listed expenses and awards.
