Ripple has reached an agreement with Robinhood to broaden the use of RLUSD, its digital dollar. The arrangement is designed to tighten trading and financing connections between the companies’ institutional operations while helping Robinhood improve how it manages money internally.
Under the partnership, RLUSD will be used to settle institutional trades and automate Robinhood’s treasury operations. The companies will also expand access to digital asset trading and financing through Ripple Prime and Bitstamp, the global crypto exchange Robinhood acquired last year.
The agreement advances Robinhood’s ambition to become a global financial super app that centralizes more of its customers’ financial lives. At the same time, Robinhood is expanding infrastructure that can serve both retail and institutional clients.
RLUSD will provide another link among the companies’ trading, financing and treasury services. Ripple and Robinhood are presenting that connection as part of a financial system in which institutions can move funds and settle transactions beyond traditional banking schedules.
“Utility is what moves stablecoins forward,” Robinhood Crypto general manager Johann Kerbrat said in a statement shared with CNBC. He said Bitstamp and Robinhood would gain access to RLUSD for institutional settlement, Ripple Treasury for operations and Ripple Prime for financing.
“That is what a connected, global financial system looks like,” Kerbrat said. His comments framed the partnership as a coordinated effort spanning settlement, internal money management and institutional financing rather than merely another listing agreement.
Stablecoins have long served as a workhorse of cryptocurrency markets. They allow traders to transfer money among exchanges, buy and sell crypto assets, and hold funds between trades without converting those holdings back into traditional currency.
Their role is broadening as cryptocurrency markets move toward continuous liquidity. Stablecoins can enable settlement close to instantly and transfer dollar denominated value at any time, regardless of the operating hours kept by traditional banks.
Companies are consequently looking beyond simply listing stablecoins on exchanges. Issuers are betting that businesses will favor a single package combining the technology and services required to move money, settle trades and manage cash.
“Stablecoins have evolved from a crypto trading tool into a critical piece of financial infrastructure,” Ripple President Monica Long told CNBC. She pointed to their use in areas ranging from corporate payments to capital markets as evidence of that evolution.
Long said the Robinhood partnership reflects the expanding role of stablecoins. She also described the agreement as being about far more than trading, with institutions gaining the ability to operate continuously, unlock liquidity and put capital to work more efficiently.
Circle Internet Group, a Ripple competitor, is positioning itself for a similar future. Its strategy also envisions successful platforms providing both stablecoins and the underlying infrastructure that allows institutions and payment providers to use them.
Earlier this year, Circle launched the Circle Payments Network. The network connects financial institutions and payment providers that use its flagship USDC stablecoin and other digital assets to make payments across borders.
Circle’s network is its answer to Ripple Payments, which has operated for eight years. That service helps businesses transfer money across borders through several supported assets, including USDC, Ripple created XRP and RLUSD.
RLUSD joined the Ripple Payments system when the stablecoin debuted in December 2024. Since that launch, RLUSD’s market capitalization has grown to more than $2.5 billion, giving Ripple a larger presence in the expanding stablecoin market.
Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC continue to dominate the overall stablecoin market, which now exceeds $300 billion. RLUSD remains much smaller than those leading assets, but the Robinhood agreement extends its availability and institutional uses.
RLUSD will also be listed on Robinhood’s trading platform. It is already available to traders on Bitstamp and Robinhood Chain, the company’s homegrown blockchain for tokenized stocks and other assets.
Robinhood shares rose about 2.5% in early trading Tuesday, ending a decline that had lasted three days. The company was scheduled to report third quarter results for the three months ended in September after the market closed.
