The Tennessee campus has suffered frequent outages, according to The Information. A construction related disruption at the Memphis facility last week knocked some Grok models offline and also affected computing customers including Anthropic and Google.

Those disruptions exposed the financial and operational cost of racing ahead without sufficient redundancy. For customers purchasing expensive computing capacity, repeated outages can undermine confidence and potentially send business toward more established cloud infrastructure providers.

More than a dozen data center executives have reportedly departed in recent weeks, with SpaceX engineers taking their places. Musk has reportedly visited the Memphis site nearly every Sunday, indicating that the project remains a personal priority. Following the latest outage, he wrote on X that the company was “taking corrective action to ensure this does not happen again.”

A slower and more disciplined construction model could delay the arrival of new computing capacity. However, greater reliability may ultimately prove more valuable as SpaceX seeks to support demanding artificial intelligence customers and protect its reputation with large corporate clients.

While the data center overhaul introduces questions about expansion speed, SpaceX’s defense business appears to be gaining momentum. Reuters reported that the United Kingdom has spent nearly $40 million on satellite services supplied by Musk’s company.

Britain’s Defense Ministry purchased roughly $17.6 million in Starshield services and another $22.3 million in conventional Starlink services. Starshield is the military grade version of Starlink and offers enhanced encryption for sensitive government and defense communications.

The British government has deployed approximately 1,000 Starshield terminals and 500 Starlink terminals, according to the report. That substantial commitment deepens the United Kingdom’s reliance on SpaceX for secure satellite connectivity and demonstrates the strategic value of the company’s orbital network.

The United Kingdom is also the first nation outside the United States to publicly confirm that it uses Starshield. That disclosure could help SpaceX attract additional defense contracts from allied governments seeking resilient communications without waiting for slower state procurement systems to build comparable networks.

SpaceX shares posted a modest gain despite the arrival of additional potential supply in the market. About 319 million insider shares, representing roughly 7 percent of insider holdings, became eligible for sale Wednesday following the expiration of the 90 day restriction tied to the company’s public debut.

The company went public on June 12 at $135 per share, raising a record $85.7 billion and securing a valuation of approximately $1.77 trillion. SpaceX floated less than 5 percent of its equity, leaving relatively limited public supply and potentially magnifying price movements as investor demand shifts.
