Microsoft on Friday unveiled a revamped version of its Copilot software as the company pushes to combine several artificial intelligence tools within a single product. The package brings together chat, coding, and agentic capabilities under the name Autopilot.

The platform is intended to provide one destination for a range of workplace tasks. Users can prepare a pitch document, build a spreadsheet, and then ask the artificial intelligence system to reason over the information and identify insights they might not otherwise notice.

Yet Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made clear that expanding the capabilities of artificial intelligence is only part of the challenge. Winning the confidence of customers will be crucial as the software gains greater access and becomes capable of taking autonomous actions.

Nadella identified trust as the central concern facing Microsoft as it asks customers to rely more heavily on artificial intelligence. That concern becomes particularly significant when the technology handles sensitive credentials and performs tasks with less direct human involvement.

"Trust is going to be the biggest issue for us," Nadella told Deirdre Bosa.

Nadella then raised the questions that Microsoft must answer as its tools become more autonomous. "Can I really trust [AI] with all of my credentials when it does autonomous activity? How do I make sure that this is something that I can feel that I'm in control of? And in the enterprise, this is everything," he said.

The revamped Copilot also gives customers two billing choices. Microsoft will offer standard plans priced per user for general artificial intelligence work, along with a usage based option intended for longer and more complicated agentic assignments involving multiple steps.

Nadella said the combination should become especially useful as artificial intelligence model developers and providers gradually reduce subsidies for customers. Microsoft is seeking a structure that can offer broad access while charging separately when users require more extensive capabilities.

"The way I think about our subscriptions [is] it's ultimately going to deliver more value every day of the week as models improve. And then on top of that, we have usage-based functionality that any user at any time can use with no limits," the CEO explained.

Under that structure, customers can use the subscription for regular work while turning to usage based features when their needs go beyond the standard offering. Nadella said the arrangement is designed to deliver value as the underlying models continue to improve.

"And so that combination gives us, I think, the right business model to be able to both deliver broad access, deliver the [return on investment] that's expected, and most importantly, continuously be aligned with where customers will see value," he said.

Microsoft is also building model choice into Copilot. The company said the software will automatically route a user’s prompt to the best available model from OpenAI or Anthropic, reducing the need for customers to select a model for every request.

Users who prefer direct control will still be able to choose models manually. Microsoft also said it plans to add options from other model developers in the future, broadening the selection available through the platform beyond the initial providers.

The Windows maker said its per seat plan will include token limits, although it expects most customers will never reach them. Customers who need more capacity or additional capabilities can instead choose the usage based billing option.

The product therefore combines workplace tools, multiple artificial intelligence models, and two approaches to payment in one offering. Microsoft is positioning Copilot to handle ordinary work as well as more involved autonomous activity, while preserving a path for users who want greater model control.

Nadella’s comments place customer confidence at the center of that effort. As Copilot gains access to credentials, data, and autonomous functions, Microsoft must persuade users that they can remain in control while still receiving the productivity and return on investment the company promises.
