SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said Monday that he plans to give every child in the United States one of his shares in the company next year. Based on the number of children in the country and SpaceX’s closing stock price Friday, the proposed giveaway would be worth about $10.5 billion.

Musk currently owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares, according to an August SEC filing. When unvested awards and stock options are included, that figure rises to 6.4 billion shares, representing a 48.4% beneficial stake in the company.

Official census data showed that 72 million children under age 18 lived in the United States as of July 1, 2025. Giving each child one share would therefore require Musk to distribute roughly 72 million of his SpaceX shares.

The estimated $10.5 billion value is based on SpaceX’s closing stock price of $146.03 as of Friday. The contemplated gift would amount to a fraction of Musk’s reported holdings, even before his unvested awards and stock options are considered.

“This will be the first of many,” Musk said in a post on X. He did not provide further details about how the share giveaway would work or how the shares would reach children across the country.

CNBC reached out to SpaceX for further comment. The company’s response was not included in the report, leaving the mechanics of the planned distribution unspecified.

The announcement arrives as Musk’s financial giving has drawn attention in recent weeks, primarily because of his political contributions. The Tesla CEO has donated more than $276 million to Republican groups since July, making him the biggest known donor of the 2026 midterm election.

Of that amount, Musk directed $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund through an affiliated Texas PAC created to support Republican Ken Paxton. The Senate Leadership Fund is the Republican Party’s leading Senate super PAC.

Musk made the $158 million contribution in September through two separate donations. Those contributions totaled $75 million and $83 million, placing them among the largest political donations ever.

His SpaceX giveaway announcement also followed a separate proposal from Anthropic involving a portion of that company’s shares. Anthropic revealed that it plans to commit 5% of its shares to a new public benefit fund.

The potential size of Anthropic’s commitment could grow alongside the company’s valuation. Subject to shareholder approval, the fund would immediately receive 5% of Anthropic’s shares.

Anthropic’s board could then add another 2% at its discretion for every 50% increase in the company’s value above a set baseline. The company has not yet disclosed that baseline.

Anthropic said the fund may be used to “explore large donations,” including contributions to traditional nonprofits or direct distributions to specific populations. It also said the fund could pursue “bolder approaches” to studying and addressing AI’s disruption and displacement of jobs.

Musk responded Sunday to an Anthropic post on X about the proposed fund. “I recommend giving the shares directly to the public,” he wrote, adding that he planned to do that himself.

His announcement Monday translated that recommendation into a specific pledge involving SpaceX shares and every U.S. child. The stated plan covers approximately 72 million potential recipients and carries an estimated value of about $10.5 billion at Friday’s closing stock price.

Still, Musk’s post offered no operational details beyond the timing and basic promise. How the shares would be transferred, administered or held for children was not addressed in the information he provided.
